Mazda Pickup Rotary
Mazda's rotary pickup, also known as REPU, is the world's first and only Rotary
Wankel-engined pickup truck. The rotary engines were available only in US and
Tokyo-made pickups and Mazda B-Series and were sold only from 1974 to 1977. The
rotary engine trucks had a 4 port 13B 4-barrel carbureted engine and were said
to have smooth and quiet power. It used either four speed manual transmission
or three speed automatic transmission.
Its battery is mounted in front of the rear wheel on the outside with a locked
cover. It was the first to feature disk crakes on the front as standard. Inside
the rotary pickup is a bench seat, imitation wood grain dash and a console. The
truck also had flared fenders, front grille and round tail lights. Only about
15,000 units were made and most were for the 1974 model year. Because of the energy
crisis, Mazda restamped many of the 1974 models with a prefix ?S? selling them
as 1975 models.
For the 1976 model year, an estimated 700 units were made. The 1977 model had
moderate changes that included updated electrical system, additional 4? cab stretch
and additional 5 speed with differential gearing. After about 3000 units, the
production of Mazda rotary pickup was discontinued due to poor sales.
